When news broke last month about arsenic detected in some bottled waters sold at Walmart, Whole Foods and Target, I set out to research more about arsenic and its link to several cancers.
I pulled up articles I had on file and scoured the web for others. I read a lot, took many notes and launched into this blog.
Then, the light-bulb went off…I suddenly realized I have FIRST HAND knowledge about how arsenic in drinking and full house water can lead to adverse effects on our health.
When we first launched PUR2o more than 10 years ago, I met a gal who had purchased a home in Northwest New Jersey. In that region of the state, there are many pockets of natural arsenic which makes its way into the water feeding private wells. There are many homes in the area with private wells; so many in fact, that in 2002 NJ passed the Private Well Testing Act to protect homeowners.
This woman related what I consider a horror story. She had been in her new home beginning in September…the year is irrelevant. Her new neighbors cautioned her NOT to drink the tap water … even though there was an elaborate filtration system in the home to remediate the arsenic in her well.
She, nor did anyone in her family, drink the water. She did, however, shower with it. By December of that year she was in the hospital – dying.
Doctors were puzzled, until one put 2 and 2 together and realized while she was not ingesting the arsenic, she WAS absorbing it through her skin. Your skin is your largest organ. Hot showers open your pores making anything you put on your skin better absorbed. Clearly, she had a higher than normal sensitivity to the carcinogen than most others. Arsenic ingested all at once, will kill immediately however, in smaller doses, it can take a while to have adverse effects … it’s a cumulative poison. She was lucky … very lucky.
In 2011 we bought our home, also in northwest New Jersey, and for the first time ever, our water was coming from a private well. When we declined to keep the water softener which the previous homeowner had been renting, we were cautioned to install a new one as the water in our well also has elevated levels of arsenic. Here’s the problem: A water softener WILL NOT remediate arsenic. Ensuring no arsenic is getting from the well to the tap, requires a special customized system utilizing very specific filtration methods. A water softer simply will not work.
The previous homeowner had been under the impression that the softener had been making their water safe for many years, not realizing that the opposite was true, with life changing ramifications. We purchased the home from her after she was forced to sell following her diagnosis of lung cancer. She was moving to live with her daughter in another state.
I wish this story also had a happy ending, unfortunately is does not. Along with lung cancer, arsenic can lead to bladder, nasal passage, liver, and prostate cancer to name a few. But maybe there is one person reading this who can be saved the awful life threatening prospect of arsenic (or other contaminants) that are in their water.
It’s important to know “What’s In Your Water”, and to never take water for granted. For those of us that are purchasing and drinking water with elevated levels of arsenic, over time, could very possibly be diagnosed with – at a minimum – cardiovascular, pulmonary, immunological, neurological and endocrine (diabetes) issues and worse yet, a diagnosis that adds of of those forms of cancers linked to it.
We already know bottled water is not regulated as it should be, which is why anyone who buys and drinks bottled water should always proceed with a bit of caution.
