When it comes to Alkaline water, or Alkaline diets, there are basically three points of view…people who love it, those who haven’t heard about it, and others who don’t believe in it. But rarely are those who love it or don’t believe in it, actually informed on the facts around Alkaline water.
I recently read a blog for where the writer claimed “all Alkaline water is bad for you” with a very un-informed explanation. I also speak to people who think “all Alkaline water is good for you” with no understanding of how and why. So today, hopefully I can share with you some of the distinctions of Alkaline Water options as well as non-Alkaline water.

Let’s remind ourselves; what does the “pH of water” mean anyway? We know it is a measurement for how Acidic or Alkaline the water is. pH stands for potential of Hydrogen – measuring the amount of free hydrogen in a substance. pH also identifies ORP – Oxygen Reduction Potential – where the more Acidic a substance is, the less Oxygen it has. Conversely, the more Alkaline a substance is, the more Oxygen it has.
As a basic rule, virus and disease cells HATE an Oxygen rich Alkaline environment, and thrive in Acidic, low Oxygen surroundings. So, when claims are made about the health benefits of Alkaline Water, what experts are referring to are benefits existing BECAUSE the water is Alkaline. PUR2o water measures Alkaline, usually falling somewhere between 9 & 9.5 pH.
Most people know Tap Water has a pH of 7, making it neutral. Most Bottled Water tends to be between 5.5 & 6.5, making it acidic. Fresh Water and Sea Water are at a pH of around 8, making it Alkaline.
To give a perfect example of “whether all Alkaline Water is equal”, is to discuss electrolyzed water. One of the most common at-home Alkaline water systems are units that sit on the countertop. As your water passes through, it is electrically charged in order to ionize the water. The ionization process causes the water to become Alkaline. Water that has zero dissolved solids in it (such as distilled or RO water) cannot be Ionized because in order to hold an electric charge, there must be particles in the water. In effect, it cannot be purified first. Water that is Ionized using electricity is also Ionizing whatever dissolved solids are already in the water. Depending on what is in your original water supply is, this can be “good stuff” and “bad stuff”. If you are ionizing (giving electrical charge to) Tap Water, then you are probably ionizing Chlorine and possibly other disinfectants, industrial chemicals, pesticides and agricultural waste, micro plastics and as we have been recently discovering, dangerous chemicals such as PFOS’s & PFOA’s.
“But I use bottled water!” I hear you say! Trying to Ionize some bottled water and all distilled water would be pointless as due to the Purification and Filtration processes, they become “clean” of bad staff and also Acidic. Those waters should have no dissolved solids left in them to hold the electric charge.
