A Tall Glossary of Water

In a world where Sales and Marketing take the top spot in most companies, more and more focus is spent on creating buzz words, and spinning stories to ensure their products are painted in the best light. It can be confusing and complicated to differentiate products from each other, and work out what is right for you.

When I personally joined PUR2o, it felt like a strange world with lots of information coming at me left and right, and while I spent time to research and get to know our products and compare them to other competitive companies, I realized that the world of mis-information, and wrong information was so large within the space of health and wellness that I was having a hard time “filtering” it all!! There was a time when Blogs were a trustable information highway. Now they are more about undercover marketing and sales for a specific product. So today I wanted to help all of you fellow blog-readers out there, and create a post that helps us understand the positive and negatives of water, and learn what some of the industry words are so, if nothing else, we can make informed decisions about our healthy water choices.

PUR2o’s Alkaline Plus Drinking Water System provides water straight from your tap that is Filtered, Purified, and then Mineralized; making it Hydrogenated and Alkaline as well as enhanced with Antioxidants and Electrolytes.

But what do all those words mean?? Here is my “Glossary of Water” for you to understand more about the words that are used, and to work out what is right for you!

Filtration: Filtration is a physical process where particles are separated from a suspension. In terms of water, filtration can come in various forms to filter particles of various sizes. Some types of filters will remove large particles such as soil, sand, dirt, etc., and other filters remove smaller particles that you cannot see with the naked eye, such as parasites, bacteria and chemicals.

Purification: Purified Water is water that has gone through the process of “Purification”. This means that it has been either filtered or gone through a process to remove all the good stuff” and “bad stuff” in it, so it has a TDS reading of Zero. Purification can be done through Distillation, De-ionization or De-mineralization as well as Carbon Filtration or Reverse Osmosis to name the most common processes.

TDS: “Total Dissolved Solids” is a scale that measures the number of solids dissolved in the water sample such as Minerals, Salts, Metals etc. The measurement is in ppm (parts per million). The higher the number, the more hidden things are in your sample. This can be both “good stuff” and “bad stuff” in the water, so remember – if a TDS reading is Zero, then the water has no contaminants at all, but it also has none of those healthy Minerals in it anymore either. My swimming pool has a TDS reading of over 800 because of the chemicals added to keep it clean, and the river water at the bottom of my garden has over 400 TDS in it… I am sure that there is a mix of good and bad things lurking in there!

pH of Water: The pH of water measures how Acidic or Alkaline the water is. pH stands for potential of Hydrogen – measuring the amount of free hydrogen in a substance. pH also identifies ORP – Oxygen Reduction Potential – where the more Acidic a substance is, the less Oxygen it has, and the more Alkaline the substance is the more Oxygen it has. As a basic rule, virus cells and disease cells HATE an Oxygen rich Alkaline environment, and thrive in Acidic, low Oxygen surroundings. PUR2o water measures Alkaline, usually falling somewhere between 9 & 9.5 pH.

Electrolytes: Electrolytes are water soluble minerals that carry an electric charge. In our case PUR2o water provides electrolytes through Ionized Potassium. Potassium’s job in the body is to help keep your cells clean by removing waste, and healthy by allowing nutrients in to your cells. When you drink water such as distilled water that has no electrolytes, the body takes electrolytes from itself and adds them to the water to aid in the digestion, ultimately diluting the electrolytes in the body. Lack of electrolytes in the body can be linked to medical symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, headache, muscular cramps and impaired heart rate.

Anti-oxidants: Anti-oxidants in water neutralize the ability of free radicals to cause damage to our cells. Free radicals damage our cells by stealing electrons. The hydroxyl ions present in our ionized water are the anti-oxidants, which give electrons to the free radicals, so that they do not steal from our body.

Water Types:

Distilled Water: Distilled water is a type of Purified Water that has been heated and evaporated and then collected, to separate it from the Dissolved Solids that it may contain. This process leaves behind Sediments, Salts, Minerals, and Bacteria. As a general rule, distilled water should have a TDS reading of Zero.

De-ionization/De-Mineralization: a process to completely strip the water of its Ionic Charge, through removing all minerals in the water. The result is the same, even though the processes can vary. The end result is water that is Acidic, has no natural inorganic minerals, but the process does not remove any organic materials such as viruses and bacteria. This water type is used for manufacturing formulas where minerals or metals in the water may react with chemicals or metals present in the mixture, so this is avoided using De-ionized or De-mineralized water instead of other water types.

Spring Water: is essentially water that has come up through the ground and has natural minerals collected from the Earth. Where the water source begins will affect the quality of the Spring water. To be in a bottle, however, the Spring water must be filtered and purified. We cannot choose what we filter, so some, most or all of those special Spring Water minerals may no longer be in your Spring Water once it makes it into a bottle. The FDA states that to call it Spring Water, it must have been collected from the ground where it naturally rises to the surface. It does not state what needs to be in the final for sale product.

Mineral Water: is water that has a higher content of minerals such as sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium than regular water. This can either be collected from a natural source where the minerals are picked up by the water while seeping through the earth, or “man made” – enhanced and added during a bottling process. Minerals that are added to products are either “inorganic” meaning they come from rock sources, or “organic” meaning they come from living organisms, such as plants.

Bottled Water: Unless is it specified as Spring Water or Mineral Water, bottled water is local municipal water brought into the bottling factory that is then Filtered and Purified to ensure that it is clean and safe for consumption. As a general rule, these bottled waters have no Mineral content, are Acidic, and lack Oxygen.

Electrolysed Water: For water to be Alkaline it is Ionized. Water that reads Zero on a TDS meter cannot be Ionized because it requires particles in the water to hold the electric charge. PUR2o naturally Ionizes the water using minerals, not through Electrolysis. Water that is Ionized using electricity, but does not add the necessary minerals into the water to hold the Ionic charge, are just Ionizing whatever dissolved solids are already in the water. As we mentioned earlier, these can be “good stuff” and “bad stuff” depending on what your original water supply is. Trying to Ionize most bottled water and distilled water however would be pointless as due to their Purification and Filtration processes, they should have no dissolved solids to hold the electric charge.

Phew! That’s a lot of information, but hopefully valuable to you when making important health decisions for your family. At least now you have a better understanding when we say that PUR2o’s Alkaline Plus Drinking Water System provides water straight from your tap that is Filtered, Purified, and then Mineralized; making it Hydrogenated and Alkaline as well as enhanced with Antioxidants and Electrolytes!

All we hope for you is that you have a happy and healthy life, drinking safe and healthy water!

THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET

We are also committed to creating a greater awareness of how plastic and plastic bottles are polluting our planet and our bodies by providing the best water out of your tap, eliminating the amount of plastic we dispose of and how much water we consume out of plastic bottles.

THE HEALTH OF YOUR POCKET

Aside from all the health benefits of Alkaline Water, you save a tremendous amount of money with our systems! Did you know?… If you drink eight glasses of water each day, it will cost approximately $55 per year; vs $1,700 if you were to drink the same amount of bottled water instead. The PUR2o system pays for its self in only one year by one persons water consumption.
