“The PLASTIC Age”

Our message, is inspired by the 60 minutes documentary this past week. Sometimes someone else says something better than you can. Sometimes another person can relay and articulate what you have been trying to shout about for years in a way that makes people sit up and pay attention.

We urge you to take a moment and read or watch Sharyn Alfonsi’s amazing piece on the global problems with plastic, the pacific garbage patch, and how the way we use and dispose of plastic truly is affecting the whole globe.

I watched this for the first time sat with two young girls, who are the next generation to inherit the earth. I couldn’t help but wonder, and they couldn’t help but wonder, what it will take for all humans to wake up and do something. I can never see a future without plastic, we have become too dependent on it, however unless we do something about it, it won’t be AI overtaking the earth in the next 50 years, it will be plastic taking over the earth.

THESE PARTS MADE US SIT UP AND TAKE NOTE:

There are plenty of disturbing images of tons and tons of plastic waste floating, sinking and traveling around the globe, showing up in places like Antartica and Midway, where we do not inhabit. If my toothbrush gets wrongly disposed of in New York, it ends up floating thousands of miles and washing up on the beach in Midway?

In the documentary 24 year-old Boyan Slat said it best, “There was the Stone Age, then the Bronze Age, now we are in the Plastic Age”. We were inspired by young humans stepping up to try to get something done about the plastic garbage that is taking over the world.

We saw the inside contents of an Albatros, filled with plastic. How can we ignore what we are doing to nature. They are eating our plastics and its killing them.

And we saw  images of water so full of garbage that it looks as though you could walk on the surface of it, in Indonesia and other places around the globe including LA.

Ms Alfonsi’s documentary didn’t give us call to action points on what is next and what we can do to try to do our part. So let us chime in and help with some ideas of our own.

What can we do?

STOP PURCHASING OR USING ONE-TIME USE PLASTICS: Armed with the knowledge that 80% of sea waste is plastic, the Europe Union has just committed to a single use plastic ban, which will be 90% implemented by 2025. The UK implemented a 5p charge on single use plastic bags in October 2015, and within 1 year saw an 85% drop in usage from 7 billion bags to 500 million. Take those Walmart bags back with you next time and reuse them or take boxes or re-usuable “bag for life” bags instead to the store just like all the UK residents are doing!

STOP BUYING BOTTLED WATER under the assumption it is better for you. IT IS NOT. Our company is founded on the want to educate consumers on the quality of bottled water, and how you can have the same quality and MUCH BETTER from your tap with the right filtration system. It is estimated that more than 1500 bottles per second are disposed of in the United States, and 50 billion bottles are disposed of globally each year.

If everyone has a PUR2o water filter and purification system at home, they in turn reduce the amount of plastic they dispose. Our at home water systems eliminate the need to buy water, which is estimated to be at least 1000 plastic bottles saved per family of four per year.

According to Forbes, globally humans buy a million plastic bottles per minute, 91% of all plastic is not recycled and on top of that, it is estimated that more than half a trillion plastic bottles will be sold in 2020.

START DISPOSING OF PLASTIC RESPONSIBLY! The scariest fact is, that estimates say by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish. We need to eliminated unnecessary plastic usage and be careful how we dispose of plastic, so that we can slowly stop the exponential increase of plastic garbage in the world, walk back some of the damage and allow a global clean up effort to begin.
